Northumberland and Durham District Junior League 2019/20

Due to Coronavirus, N&D Junior League galas and finals for the season 2019/20 have been cancelled.  The Junior League Committee will be monitoring the situation for the 2020/21 season and will advise in due course.

What is Junior League?

Junior League is often the first gala where swimmers compete in individual and team events against other clubs, in a mock competitive environment. Swimmers participation is by invitation only and will be advised by coaches.

These events are intended to allow swimmers to gain experience within a fun and friendly competitive environment, with little focus on the outcome of the race rather the skills/processes that are required to become a successful swimmer. Swimmers selected to compete within Junior League are given the opportunity to demonstrate excellent skills within this race setting, while gaining vital competitive experience.

Teams enter from all over the North East. Each club competes with other clubs in the same division, over three heats, with the top six teams in the division making the finals in September.

Junior League is separated into three divisions 1st, 2nd and 3rd and is aimed at swimmers aged between 9 and 12 years old, with swimmers competing against other individuals of their own age. Points are awarded in each event; 6 points for 1st, 5 points for 2nd, 4 points for 3rd, 3 points for 4th, 2 points for 5th and 1 point for 6th. These scores contribute towards an overall team score for the day’s gala.

The galas themselves last 2.5 – 3 hours. Events for 9 year old swimmers are 25m, 10 years and over 50m and there are also relays. It is fast, it is furious, it is loud and above all else it is fun!!

Swimmers will be selected by coaches based on their attendance and performance in training and galas. The selected team will be published on the notice board and website before the event. Parents must indicate their child’s availability to swim by placing a tick next to their name on the notice board as soon as possible.

Swimmers are limited to the number of events they can compete in. All swimmers competing in finals MUST have competed in one of the three qualifying rounds.

The ‘age as at dates’ for 2020 Junior League swimmers are as follows: (this is based on 2019 information and is subject to change)

for 9 year olds – 31 December 2020 (this applies to Div 2 and Div 3 clubs only)
for 10, 11 & 12 year olds – 31 December 2020

For Div 1 clubs only: for 9 year olds – age at date is 24 November 2020. So a swimmer who becomes 10 any time after 25 November 2020 is a 10 year old Junior League swimmer.

Competition Days

All swimmers are encouraged to travel with the team on the bus to and from the competition venue. There is unfortunately limited space for parents on the bus but we would like parents to come along and support their child and their team! Swimmers will be supervised at all times by members of the coaching team.

Swimmers must remain on poolside throughout the competition, from warm up until the last event! No swimmers should leave poolside without asking a member of the coaching team. It is a very fast moving competition with very little time between events, and we don’t want any swimmers to miss their race! Swimmers will be told when they are swimming and in which event. They will be directed to the correct end of the pool by a member of the coaching team. A Team sheet will be given out on the bus outlining which events each swimmer is in.
